Ramsau

The municipality Ramsau, in which our pension is located, ideally embedded in a picturesque landscape between mountains, beautiful forest and Hintersee.

It is located on the Königssee in the district of Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria, close to the border with Austria, 35 km south of Salzburg and 150 km south-east of Munich. It is situated north of the Berchtesgaden National Park.

Ramsau is famous for its high mountains, including the third highest mountain in Germany, the fabled Mount Watzmann (2713 m), and for the Lake Hintersee.

Ramsau is one of the most picturesque villages in Germany.

Castle Wimbach (Wimbachschloss)

The Wimbachschloss, which is 937 m above sea level in the Wimbachgries, can be reached on foot in about 1.5 hours from our guesthouse.

The castle was built in 1784 and was later used as a hunting lodge, especially by King Max II and the Prince Regent Luitpold.

Today a mountain restaurant is operated in the Wimbachschloss, where you can strengthen yourself after the ascent.

Pilgrimage church Maria Kunterweg

Pilgrimage church Maria Kunterweg

Besides the church of St. Sebastian there is another church in Ramsau, the pilgrimage church Maria Kunterweg ("Kunterwegkirche", "Maria Kunterweg", "Maria Himmelfahrt am Kunterweg"), which is standing by a forest above the valley.

The church can be reached on foot from Ramsau: There is a steep ascending way, which is around 700 m long. The name "Kunterweg" origins from the Middle High German word kunter (also: gunter), which means 'animal, small farm animal' - like that the name "Kunterweg" still reminds about the original significance as a cattle route for sheep and goats.

The construction of the church was completed in 1733; today it is regarded as one of the most original works of Bavarian rococo.

Blue Ice Hut

Blue Ice Hut

The Blaueishütte (Blue Ice Hut), which is open from mid-May to mid-October, is a hut of the German Alpine Club. In addition to culinary specialties, the Blaueishütte also offers overnight accommodation (reservation required).

The hut is located at an altitude of 1680 m above sea level. The surrounding peaks of the Hochkalter rise up, so that from the Blaueishütte you can enjoy a wonderful view of the valley. The ascent from Ramsau (from the Pfeifenmacherbrücke) takes about 3 hours.

Sheep farming Wimbachlehen

Sheep farming Wimbachlehen

The sheep breed "Alpines Steinschaf" is one of the oldest sheep breeds and also the kind of sheep that is native to the Alp area. Today, the "Alpines Steinschaf" is threatened by extinction.

In Ramsau, this breed is being bred in the sheep farm Wimbachlehen. The farm is one of only four "Alpines Steinschaf"-sheep farms in Bavaria. Also a farm shop is run there, where different kinds of (sheep-)wool, its products, furs and much more can be found.

The magic forest (Zauberwald)

The magic forest (Zauberwald)

The magic forest, which is located in Ramsau is one of the finest geotopes Bavaria, according to the Bavarian State Office for the Environment. This idyllic place originated thousands of years ago by a rock fall, and today the large boulders are characteristic of the forest. Through this rockslide originated the Hintersee.

This is the most beautiful areas of Europe and was in the 19th century motif for numerous landscape painters.

Parish church St. Sebastian

Parish church St. Sebastian

The parish church Saint Sebastian is the parish church of Ramsau nearby Berchtesgaden . It is consecrated to the saints Sebastian and Fabian. Particularly from the "Malerwinkel" with the Ramsauer Ache and the Ertlsteg in the foreground and the Reiteralpe in the background the church is a popular picture and photo motive.

It was built in 1512 under provost Gregor Rainer and was extended in 1692 in the baroque style. It has a tower with baroque onion shaped tower which is covered like the whole church with wooden shingles.

Hintersee Lake

Hintersee Lake

The Hintersee near Ramsau is 18 m deep at its deepest point. Due to smaller inflows of fresh mountain spring water, it has a maximum water temperature of 16 degrees Celsius even in the summer months. So it is only suitable to a limited extent for bathing. It is only about 4 km away from the guest house.

If you hike through the "magic forest" to reach it, you will be enchanted by the landscape even before you are at the lake: It is beautifully embedded in the mountains and is a relaxation for the eyes and the soul. In winter you can go skiing and tobogganing here, in summer - hiking.
